For the most part, it's Stapp people do not like. Early on, how he treated people like other bands they toured with set things in a negative way for Creed. That trickles down to radio djs, fans and people who write for publications. And, when you are on top, we know people want to take you down. We see it happen over and over with pretty much most people in the public eye. But it's rooted in how Stapp treated people.
People say they hate lots of bands, yet those bands have monster album sales and sell out arenas. So I think it's more like a few very vocal haters who try to make it seem like something is hated by all when that is obviously not the truth. Yes for Creed, people do not like Scott and, that started with his own actions. I think if they are going to keep making music, he should stay more in the background so they can rebuild something new without that drama clouding it all up.
I don't think NB sucks. They have lots of great songs. They certainly don't have a Mark Tremonti level guitar player that's for sure, but saying they suck is not cool. That comparison is used because they both have reached great heights as bands.
The whole saying something sucks is sort of immature, not every person on the earth is going to like the same music. Opera music is considered the highest level singers, but that doesn't make it the best music. It's about personal taste, about what speaks to you and your life. When you are 14 it might be a death metal band. When you are 20 it might be a blues band. I think it's silly the way people go around taking time out of the day to say something sucks. Why bother?
I agree about Scott getting things off to a bad start from the beginning. It's well known in music that when people like you they help you do well, and vice versa. The other guys in Creed are so easy going that they should be the focus on anything that comes from Creed in the future, that way people will start to see Scott in a different way.
It's the Stapp part of it for sure but like Mark has said, "people like to see the champ get knocked down". If Stapp would chill out for a few years and stay chill while the other guys did the talking for Creed, I think that would go a long way with getting things back in a positive direction if they hit us up with more albums and tours.

[WHY PEOPLE LIKE CREED] Talented musicians, clever songwriting, in tha day they were good lookin suns ava b*tches ..and they were the type of rock band christians could get into without p*ssing off god [WHY PEOPLE HATE CREED] They either saw scott as a douch, a contradiction or both, constant overplay on radio stations and tough guys who listened to Pantera and Limp Biscuit thought the music was gay ..when in reality ..they were gay as hell craycray
We've dun it. A machine that can feel the whole spectrum of human emotion, sh*ty, crappy, sad, horny and hungry ..it can feel it all!

People trash talk any band or singer who hits big. Stapp's personality only made things worse for Creed, if he was laid back and cool with people like the rest of the guys, things would not of gotten as out of hand with haters. I can see a chance of things changing if Stapp does mellow out and let the others do the talking since they each are so well liked by media and fans.
Anyone who actually knows Creed, like all the songs on all the albums, cannot say they hate Creed. The people who hate on them have no idea about any songs except Higher and WAWO most of the time. Once press did what they did about the religion thing, it was also a reason for some people to pick on the band. I always challenge those kind of people to go see them live and actually listen to all the songs they have.
We all know even though some people wont admit it, that Stapp is the reason this band does not have a good reputation. Maybe it could change with the right steps taken on a PR level and Stapp getting out of the way.
